Day 2

Saturday

07:30 – 08:30              Continental Breakfast

 09:00 – 16:00              Plenary Session 1

                                                3-2-1-Lift Off!

Hawai`i Space Tours and the Hawai`i Space Exploration Society are our hosts in a journey from sea to sky.

We begin with a voyage aboard the appropriately-named Hokuhele, and travel three miles offshore where we launch a series of small model rockets to test the possibility of human-rated sea launches.

During our voyage we will enjoy a light snack and discuss the feasibility of commercial space tours to L-5, the Moon, and beyond.

Returning to shore, we will head for the heart of the island, aiming for the summit. Our journey will take us across lunar-like lava fields and up the world’s tallest mountain to see first hand types of surfaces settlers of other worlds might experience..

As we travel, we will learn how these islands formed and grew, as an analog to the evolution of other planets.

We will learn how the ancient Polynesians brought with them all the things they needed to live in their new homeland.

Our first stops will be to hike across lunar-like landscapes and see first-hand the evolving ecology of this other worldly land.

At Mauna Kea State Park, we will enjoy a picnic lunch as we orient ourselves to the ever-changing geology of this island.

At the 9,000 foot elevation of Mauna Kea, we will acclimate to the rarified atmosphere. The visitor center here honors Ellison Onizuka, Hawai`i’s famed and beloved astronaut. As we allow our bodies to adjust, we will pay our respects to Hawaiian tradition at the traditional altar, and learn how today’s Kanaka maoli, indigenous people of the islands, resolve the conflicts, problems, and benefits brought by the melding and clash of the modern and ancient worlds, ans explore some ideas of how planetary explorers might live together harmoniously in long-term space voyages.

Traveling on toward the summit,  we will see cutting-edge observatories such as the Smithsonian Sub-Millimeter Array, the Canada/France/Hawai`i telescope, and  Japan’s Subaru telescope.

After watching the tropical sun set, we will return to the visitor center for star-gazing and a light supper, after which we will return to the conference center.

This is not a tour for the faint-hearted, but for those with hearts of explorers. There will be hiking over rough terrain, and physical exertion at 13,000 foot elevation as we hike cinder cones and climb observatory stairs. Tour members should be in good physical condition with no history of respiratory or heart problems.
